There are many reasons why an underlayment may be required.
Perhaps the floor is uneven enough in which grinding the floor will not resolve the flatness of the concrete, leading to a self-levelling underlayment a more suitable system to deploy.
Some flooring systems can have a underlayment applied overtop to make the floor ready to receive a new flooring system without the need to remove what is already down, this is specifically usefully when the current system has a god bond and is sound.
Occasionally a floor needs to be raised to meet transitions between flooring systems. An underlayment can be used to reduce or eliminate the difference in height desired.
The main reason for an overlayment is to provide a consistent and clean finish to the surface of an existing damaged or worn slab. We see the use of overlayments commonly in decorative systems in which the existing slab presents too many characteristics to mask or repair.
